My Walk Through the Book of Mark by Annette Godtland

Jesus' Use of Parables (Mark 4:33-34)

33And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it. 34But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.

If you ever feel yourself wondering what Jesus meant with some of the parables, know you are in good company. Even the disciples needed the parables explained to them!

A phrase in this verse that is really catching my attention today is "And when they were alone,...". To me, this is a very key piece of information. I am finding as I am taking this time to myself to really read through the Bible that I am discovering more surprises, coming to more understanding of what I am reading, and am receiving more personal messages from the Bible than ever before. I think God wants us to set time aside to study His Word alone, so He can talk to us personally in order to explain His Word.

And that is the other aspect that comes out of receiving understanding while being alone with God and His Word. It makes it very personal. I think God has personal messages for all of us, which we will receive when we sit down alone to study His Word. The parables were meant for everyone, but when you are ready to hear, remove yourself from all distractions so it is just you and your thoughts with God, and God will explain to you what He wants you to understand!
