My Walk Through the Book of Matthew by Annette Godtland

The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)

13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him."

14When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."

Another visit by an angel in a dream, another prophesy fulfilled.

An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream a while ago to tell him to not be afraid to Mary as wife. Immediately when he woke up he did as the angel commanded. The wise men were divinely warned in a dream to not return to Harod, and they did as they were told. Again, Joseph was visited by an angel in a dream telling him to take his family to Egypt. Immediately when he woke up he did as the angel commanded. It is easy to see that the angels would be watching out for Jesus.

Prophesy said Jesus would be the Son of David. Joseph, from the family of David, was not the actual father of Jesus, though Jesus would be raised as his son. Prophesy said Jesus would be born in Bethlehem. Joseph was from Nazareth, not Bethlehem, though a National decree sent him to Bethlehem at the time of Jesus' birth. Prophesy said God would call His Son out of Egypt. Joseph and his young family was not going to spend their lives in Egypt, though they had to live in Egypt till they heard it would be safe to return. So many of the prophesies were fulfilled in such unexpected ways.

I sometimes wonder if there is an intentional parallel here. The Children of Israel were forced to go to Egypt during the great famine. Now Joseph was forced to take his family to Egypt for their own safety. The Children of Israel stayed in Egypt till God sent Moses to lead them out. Jesus would stay in Egypt till an angel told them they could return. Is Jesus' life to take some of the same paths as the Children of Israel? They would flee to Egypt for safety, but they were not to stay there indefinitely. They would be returning to their promised land.
